Talen’s Caesar

In chapter 15 of Money Jane, Talen makes caesars for Slurp-a-lurp. Although her family recipe is surprisingly Canadian, tomato juice is a good substitute for Clamato.

Talen's Caesar

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp celery salt
  • 8 oz Clamato juice
  • 1 tbsp dill pickle juice
  • 3 drops tabasco sauce
  • 3 drops worcestershire sauce
  • 3 drops Franks RedHot sauce
  • ground pepper

Instructions

  1. Salt the rim of a tall (12 oz) glass with celery salt.

  2. Fill the glass with ice, then add Clamato juice until 4/5 full.

  3. Add dill pickle juice, worcestershire sauce, tabasco sauce, and Frank's RedHot sauce.

  4. Add pepper to taste.

  5. Garnish with a lime wedge and a bacon-wrapped pickle.

Recipe Notes

Tomato juice can be used instead of Clamato juice, but then it becomes Talen's Bloody Mary.

Grandma’s Jam-Jam Recipe

In Chapter 2 of Money Jane, Talen shares her favourite Jam-Jam cookies with Kase. They’re so delicious that her grandmother wanted to post the recipe, so you could enjoy them while you read along.

Jam-Jams

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup margarine or butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup Rogers syrup
  • 1-1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3-3/4 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Cream well the margarine, sugar, eggs, syrup and vanilla. Add baking soda, salt and enough flour to make a soft dough.

  2. After you mix the dough, put it in a loaf pan lined with waxed paper. Smooth top of dough evenly. Cover with plastic wrap and put dough in fridge overnight.

  3. When ready to bake the next day, tip the loaf pan and empty the dough on the counter. Remove any waxed paper.

  4. Cut the dough in two logs (lengthwise in the loaf pan). Keep one log cold in the fridge while slicing the other into 1/4 inch thick pieces. Place cookies on greased cookie sheet.

  5. Bake in batches at 325⁰F for 10 minutes, then turn pan around and bake 5 minutes longer.

  6. While warm, sandwich the cookies with your favourite jam. Raspberry jam is best. Strawberry jam turns purplish.

Best when a few day sold. Freeze after about 4 days.

Cali’s Favorite Scuffles Recipe

In Chapter 1 of How To Set The World On Fire, Cali is excited when she receives a care package from home. She searches frantically for her favourite treat and is overjoyed when she finds a jar of scuffles made just for her!

She doesn’t end up sharing any with her brother, but scuffles should be enjoyed by everyone! Below is the recipe so you can taste them too.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup water lukewarm
  • 1 package yeast
  • 3 cups flour
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk cold
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 2 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. In a medium sized bowl, pour water and add 1 tsp sugar. Sprinkle over yeast and let soak for 15 to 20 minutes.

  2. In another large bowl, mix flour, 3 tbsp sugar, and salt. Cut butter into pieces, then add to flour mixture. Use pastry blender to cut butter until crumbly. Add milk, eggs and yeast mixture. Mix well to make a soft dough.

  3. Place dough in a container with a lid, and let stand in refrigerator overnight.

  4. In the morning, divide the dough into 4 parts. Mix 1/2 cup sugar with cinnamon. Roll or portion the dough using some of the sugar/cinnamon on both sides and roll it into a circle. Cut in wedges as you would a pie, and roll from the wide end to the narrow end. Place the narrow end on the bottom  of a greased cookie sheet.

  5. Bake at 350⁰F for 10 to 20 minutes.
